What size chandelier for a dining room?

Choose a chandelier about one-half to two-thirds as wide as your dining table, with about 12 inches of table clear at each end. A 72-inch table takes a 36 to 48-inch fixture, hung 30 to 36 inches above the top.

The table decides the size of a dining room chandelier, more than the room does. A fixture sized to the table lights the food and the faces and stays clear of the people at the ends. This post gives the rule we use in the studio, a table of sizes, and what changes with round tables, long tables and tall ceilings.

How wide should a dining room chandelier be?

About one-half to two-thirds of the table, measured along the direction the fixture runs. Keep roughly 12 inches of table clear at each end, so nobody at the head of the table sits under the light.

For a round table, measure the diameter. For a rectangular table, measure the length. A 72-inch table works out to a fixture 36 to 48 inches wide.

Measure the tabletop itself, not the chairs or the rug under it. If the table extends with leaves, size to the length you use most evenings.

Does the size of the room change the answer?

Only at the margins. The table sets the range; the room tells you whether to sit near the top or the bottom of it.

In a large or open-plan room, a fixture at two-thirds of the table holds its own against the space. In a small dining room, staying near one-half keeps the ceiling from feeling crowded.

How high should it hang?

Hang the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Nobody walks under a dining chandelier, so it can sit lower than a fixture in an open room.

The ceiling height changes the length of the drop, not that measurement. Our drops adjust on site, up to 15 feet on Matrix, Titan and Nordic Rings. More in what light works for your room.

Matrix Rings covers most dining tables in one family: rings of 20, 24 and 32 inches, in 20 layouts from a single ring to a 105-inch linear run, priced from $995 to $4,895. Every Matrix ring has three dimmable zones. Configure one on Matrix Rings or compare all of them in ring chandeliers.

Round or linear for a rectangular table?

Either works if the width is right. A round or staggered ring layout makes a sculptural center point; a linear fixture follows the length of the table and spreads light to both ends.

Past about 96 inches of table, a linear layout usually lights the ends better than one round fixture. We compare the two in linear or round for a long table.

What if the ceiling is low or very high?

Under an eight-foot ceiling, a single ring is usually the better choice, because a stacked set needs more vertical room to read. Pick the ring by the table width as above.

Under a tall ceiling, stacked rings fill the height that a single ring leaves empty. See one ring or stacked rings for how the layouts compare.

Frequently asked

What size chandelier for a 72-inch dining table?

A fixture 36 to 48 inches wide. That is one-half to two-thirds of the table, and it leaves about 12 inches of table clear at each end.

What size chandelier for a round table?

One-half to two-thirds of the table's diameter. A 48-inch round table takes a 24 to 32-inch fixture, such as a single 32-inch ring.

Can a chandelier be too big for a table?

Yes. Once the fixture runs closer than about 12 inches to the ends of the table, it crowds the people sitting there and the light spills off the table.

How high should a dining room chandelier hang?

The bottom of the fixture should sit 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, whatever the ceiling height.

Does a bigger room need a bigger chandelier?

Size to the table first. In a large or open room, choose a width near two-thirds of the table; in a small room, stay near one-half.
