Linear or round: which chandelier for a long table or kitchen island?
A long table or a kitchen island has one direction that matters: its length. The fixture over it either follows that line or sits at its center. This post explains when each shape works, how long a linear fixture should be, and how ring chandeliers can run linear too.
When does a linear chandelier make sense?
A linear chandelier makes sense over anything long and narrow: a rectangular dining table, a kitchen island, a counter with stools. It spreads light along the full length, so the ends get as much as the middle.
It also keeps the sightline across the room open. A long, low profile reads lighter than a wide round fixture hanging at the same height.
When is a round chandelier the better choice?
A round chandelier suits a round or square table, where every seat is the same distance from the center. It also works over a rectangular table up to about 72 inches, where one centerd fixture still reaches both ends.
Round or staggered ring layouts are the sculptural choice. They make the fixture the focal point of the room, where a linear piece follows the furniture.
How long should a linear chandelier be?
About one-half to two-thirds of the table or island length, with roughly 12 inches clear at each end. That is the rule we use in the studio for every shape.
- A 72-inch table or island takes 36 to 48 inches, such as the 48-inch Matrix Light Bar.
- A 96-inch table takes 48 to 64 inches, such as Matrix 2 rings linear at 54 inches.
- A 120-inch table takes 60 to 80 inches, such as Matrix 3 rings linear at 78 inches.
Over a table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the top. More on height in what light works for your room.
Can a ring chandelier be linear?
Matrix Rings can: its linear layouts hang rings side by side on one axis, built for long dining tables and islands. They run from two 24-inch rings at 54 inches to five rings at 105 inches.
| Fixture | Length | Light | Price |

The Matrix Light Bar is the simplest way to light an island: a 48-inch bar with gold end caps, in black or coffee, $595. See it on Matrix Light Bar, or configure a linear ring layout on Matrix Rings.
What light does a kitchen island need?
Two kinds at different times: direct light on the counter while you cook, and a softer glow once people sit down. A fixture with separate zones does both.
The Matrix Light Bar and Matrix Rings each have three zones: a down spotlight onto the surface, a side ambient glow, and both together. Every zone dims on its own from the remote.
Can you mix a linear and a round fixture in one room?
They mix well when they light different things. A linear fixture over the island and a round ring over the dining table read as two zones of one open room.
Keeping the same family helps them sit together. The Light Bar and Matrix Rings both pair black with gold accents and share the same three-zone light.
Frequently asked
What size linear chandelier for a 96-inch table?
Between 48 and 64 inches, one-half to two-thirds of the table, with about 12 inches clear at each end. A two-ring linear Matrix at 54 inches fits that range.
Is a linear chandelier good over a kitchen island?
Yes. It follows the length of the island and lights the whole counter evenly. A fixture with a down spotlight zone puts working light where you prep.
Can a round chandelier go over a rectangular table?
Yes, up to about 72 inches of table. Beyond that, a linear fixture or a linear ring layout lights the ends better.
How high should a linear chandelier hang over a table?
The bottom of the fixture should sit 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, the same as a round chandelier.
How long is the Matrix Light Bar?
48 inches, with a 3.5-inch profile, three dimmable zones and gold end caps. It costs $595.
