One ring or stacked rings: which ring chandelier fits your room?

Choose one ring for a low ceiling, a small table or a quiet look, and stacked rings for a tall room, a stairwell or a foyer. Stacked rings of different sizes fill the height that a single ring leaves empty.

A ring chandelier can hang as one ring or as several, and the choice changes how the whole room reads. The ceiling height and the space under the fixture decide it more than taste does. This post compares single, staggered, concentric and linear layouts, with sizes and prices.

When is a single ring the right choice?

A single ring suits a low ceiling, a small table or a room where you want the ceiling to stay calm. It is the cleanest statement a ring chandelier makes.

Under an eight-foot ceiling, one ring is usually the better choice, because a stacked set needs more vertical room to read. Matrix single rings come in 20, 24 and 32 inches, from $995.

When do stacked rings make sense?

Stacked rings make sense under a tall ceiling, over a stairwell or in a double-height entry. Rings of different sizes at staggered heights fill the vertical space a single ring leaves empty.

They also turn the fixture into the room's focal point. A staggered layout reads as a sculpture from below and from the floor above.

  • Matrix staggered: 2 rings at 40 or 48 inches wide, or 3 rings at 48 inches, from $1,695.
  • Titan: 16, 24 and 32-inch rings, 48 inches across, in industrial gunmetal.
  • Nordic Rings: 40, 32 and 24-inch rings at 66 inches, or 32, 24 and 20 at 48 inches, from $1,495.

What are concentric rings?

Concentric rings nest inside one another on one plane, making a tight, dramatic halo. They give the impact of several rings in the width of the largest one.

That makes them useful over a round table or in a room that cannot take a wide fixture. Matrix concentric comes as two rings in a 24-inch area or three rings in 32 inches, from $1,995.

How do the layouts compare?

Each layout answers a different room. The table compares the four Matrix arrangements.

Layout Best for Width Matrix price
Single ring Low ceilings, small tables, a quiet look 20 to 32 in $995 to $1,495
Staggered Tall rooms, stairwells, double-height entries 40 to 48 in From $1,695
Concentric Round tables, a dramatic halo in less width 24 to 32 in From $1,995
Linear Long dining tables and kitchen islands 54 to 105 in From $2,195

Matrix Rings is the most flexible of our ring families, with 20 layouts from a single 20-inch ring to a five-ring, 105-inch run, priced from $995 to $4,895. Configure it on Matrix Rings or compare Matrix, Titan, Cristallo and Nordic in ring chandeliers.

How many rings for a dining table?

Size the fixture to the table, then pick the layout. In the studio we aim for one-half to two-thirds of the table, with about 12 inches clear at each end.

A 48-inch round table suits a single 32-inch ring or three concentric rings at 32 inches. A 72-inch table suits three rings at 48 inches. The full table of sizes is in what size chandelier for a dining room.

How much ceiling height do stacked rings need?

More than a single ring, because the rings hang at different heights. Under a standard eight-foot ceiling, one ring is the safer choice.

Under a tall ceiling the drop does the work: it adjusts on site, up to 15 feet on Matrix, Titan, Nordic and Cristallo Rings. Over a table, keep the lowest ring 30 to 36 inches above the top.

Frequently asked

Is one ring or three better for a dining room?

It depends on the table and the ceiling. One ring suits a smaller table or an eight-foot ceiling; three rings at 48 inches suit a 72-inch table under a taller ceiling.

What is a staggered ring chandelier?

Rings of different sizes hung at different heights. The layout fills the height of a tall room, a stairwell or a double-height entry.

What is the difference between stacked and concentric rings?

Stacked rings hang at different heights. Concentric rings nest inside one another on one plane, giving a halo in the width of the largest ring.

Can a ring chandelier work on an eight-foot ceiling?

Yes, as a single ring. A stacked set needs more vertical room to read properly.

Are all ring chandeliers dimmable?

Every Mistiva ring chandelier dims. Matrix, Titan and Cristallo have three zones; Nordic Rings has one warm 3000K zone.
