Battery, plug-in or hardwired: which wall sconce should you choose?
The three kinds of wall sconce look alike on the wall and differ in everything behind it: how they get power, who installs them, and what they cost to put up. This post compares them side by side, then explains when each one is the right call.
How do battery, plug-in and hardwired sconces compare?
Battery sconces are the fastest to put up, hardwired sconces give the most light, and plug-in sconces sit in between with a visible cord. The table compares Mistiva's own models.
| Battery | Plug-in | Hardwired | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | USB-C rechargeable battery | Outlet, through a cord | 120V house wiring |
| Install | 1 or 2 screws, about 15 minutes | 1 or 2 screws plus the cord to an outlet | Junction box, by a qualified electrician |
| Runtime | Up to 10 days per 5-hour charge | Continuous | Continuous |
| Cord on the wall | None | Yes, down to the outlet | None |
| Switch | Remote and touch button | Remote and touch button | Wall switch and remote |
| Mistiva price | From $175 | From $175 (battery models, plugged in) | From $195 |

When is a battery sconce the right choice?
Choose battery when the wall has no wiring and no outlet nearby, or when you rent. A battery sconce hangs on a bracket held by one or two screws, with nothing to connect.
Ours run up to 10 days on one 5-hour USB-C charge in ambient use. The remote's auto-off timer (15, 30 or 60 minutes) stretches that further.
When is a plug-in sconce the right choice?
Choose plug-in when an outlet sits close to where the light goes and you never want to think about charging. The trade-off is a cord running down the wall.
Every Mistiva battery sconce works as a plug-in sconce too. Leave its 10-foot (3 m) USB-C cable connected and it runs from the outlet while the battery stays full; unplug it and it carries on running on battery.
Our battery models start at $175: the AMBIO, a 23-inch aluminum bar in five finishes rated 4.8 out of 5 from 257 reviews on Loox (October 2026), the 24-inch Dream, and the Blade, sold as a pair. Compare them in battery operated wall sconces or see the Blade and AMBIO in gold.
When is a hardwired sconce the right choice?
Choose hardwired when the wall is already wired or open for a renovation and you want the light on a wall switch. It never needs charging and gives the most light.
Our hardwired AMBIO runs on 120V at 700 lumens, about the output of a 60W bulb. It connects to a standard junction box.
The U.S. Fire Administration advises that all home electrical work be done by a qualified electrician. See our hardwired wall sconces, from $195.
Which costs more to put up?
Hardwiring costs the most once you add the electrician, especially where a new junction box has to go into a finished wall. One customer, an interior designer, wrote in a review that an electrician had quoted $800 to wire sconces by a vanity.
A battery or plug-in sconce costs only the fixture and two screws. That gap is why we make our battery and hardwired sconces in the same designs and finishes: the choice comes down to the wall.
Can you mix battery and hardwired sconces in one home?
Matching designs make mixing easy. Put hardwired sconces where the walls are open during a renovation, and battery sconces on the walls you are not opening.
AMBIO comes in both versions in the same five finishes and the same 23-inch aluminum body. A hardwired pair by the bathroom mirror and a battery pair in the hallway read as one set.
All of them switch between warm 3000K, neutral 4000K and cool 6000K, so the light color can match from room to room.
Frequently asked
Are battery wall sconces as bright as hardwired ones?
Battery sconces are made for ambient light, a soft glow for evenings. Hardwired AMBIO gives 700 lumens, about a 60W bulb, for reading or a vanity.
Can a battery sconce also be a plug-in sconce?
Yes. Mistiva's battery sconces run from the outlet while their USB-C cable is connected, and switch back to battery when you unplug them.
Do plug-in sconces need an electrician?
No. A plug-in sconce mounts with screws and plugs into an existing outlet, so nothing in the wall is rewired.
Do hardwired sconces work with a wall switch?
Yes. Hardwired AMBIO works with your existing wall switch, and its remote adds dimming, three light tones and an auto on/off timer.
Which sconce is best for a rental?
A battery sconce. It leaves one or two small screw holes, changes no wiring, and comes with you when you move.
