What wall lighting works in a rental?
A rental usually comes with one ceiling light per room and outlets in the wrong places. You cannot open the walls, and you want whatever you buy to move with you. This post covers which wall lights fit those rules, how to put one up and take it down, and where it makes the most difference.
Can you put up wall sconces in a rental?
You can put up battery or plug-in sconces, because neither changes the building's wiring. A hardwired sconce connects to a junction box, which changes the building's wiring, so it needs your landlord's approval.
Battery sconces leave the least behind: one or two screw holes, about what a picture leaves. Check your lease for its rules on holes in the walls.
Which wall lights work without changing the wiring?
Three kinds work in a rental:
- Battery sconces mount flat to the wall and run on a rechargeable battery, with no cord showing.
- Plug-in sconces run from an outlet, with the cord running down the wall to it.
- Lamps need a table or floor space and an outlet nearby.
Mistiva's battery sconces do the first two jobs. They run on battery, or stay plugged in through their 10-foot (3 m) USB-C cable when an outlet is close.
How do you put one up and take it down?
Screw the bracket to the wall with one or two screws, then hang the sconce on it vertically or horizontally. On our AMBIO model this takes about 15 minutes.
Moving out is the same in reverse. Lift the sconce off, unscrew the bracket, and fill the holes as you would after taking down a picture.
Where does a sconce make the most difference in a rental?
Where the ceiling light leaves the room flat: beside the bed, along a dark hallway, either side of a mirror or a piece of art. A pair of sconces turns a single overhead light into a room you can dim for the evening.
One customer wrote, "We have small ordinary apartment but these wall lights make it look and feel special." Another described a hallway they had ignored for years becoming "the warmest part of our home."
Our battery sconces start at $175 with free shipping. The AMBIO is a 23-inch aluminum bar in five finishes, rated 4.8 out of 5 from 257 reviews on Loox (October 2026), and the Dream is 23 inches with an acrylic shade. See them all in battery operated wall sconces, or go straight to AMBIO in black or Dream in black.
Is the light good enough to replace a lamp?
Mistiva's battery sconces replace a lamp for ambient light. They switch between warm 3000K, neutral 4000K and cool 6000K, and every tone dims. Warm suits a bedroom in the evening; cool suits getting ready at a mirror.
They run up to 10 days on one 5-hour charge in ambient use. For a reading lamp's worth of light every night, keep the sconce plugged in.
What if you own the place later?
The same designs come hardwired for walls that are being built or renovated. See our hardwired wall sconces, from $195.
A hardwired sconce connects to a junction box, and the U.S. Fire Administration advises that all home electrical work be done by a qualified electrician.
Frequently asked
Do battery sconces damage rental walls?
They leave one or two small screw holes from the mounting bracket. Fill them when you move out, as you would after taking down a picture.
Do I need my landlord's permission?
A battery sconce changes no wiring and leaves one or two small screw holes. Check your lease for its rules on holes in the walls before you drill.
Can I take the sconces with me when I move?
Yes. Lift each sconce off its bracket and unscrew the bracket. Everything comes with you, including the USB-C charging cable.
What if there is no outlet near the wall?
Run it on battery. One 5-hour charge lasts up to 10 days in ambient use, and you can lift the sconce off to charge it elsewhere.
Can I use one plugged in instead?
Yes. Leave the 10-foot (3 m) USB-C cable connected and the sconce runs from the outlet while its battery stays charged.
