How do you put a light on a wall without wiring?

Mount a rechargeable wall sconce. One or two screws hold its bracket, the light hangs on it, and a USB-C battery powers it. Mistiva's battery sconces install in about 15 minutes and run up to 10 days per charge.

Most walls that need light have no wiring behind them: beside a bed, along a hallway, over a reading chair. Adding a junction box means an electrician, opened drywall and fresh paint. This post covers the ways to light a wall without any of that, how a battery sconce goes up, and when wiring is still the better call.

What are the ways to light a wall without wiring?

There are three: a battery wall sconce, a plug-in sconce with a cord to an outlet, or a lamp on a table. A battery sconce mounts flat to the wall with no cord in sight. A plug-in sconce needs an outlet within reach, and its cord stays visible down the wall.

Mistiva's battery sconces cover both cases. They run on their battery, or stay connected to the outlet through their USB-C cable and work as a plug-in light.

How does a battery wall sconce mount?

It hangs on a small bracket held by one or two screws. Mark the height, drill the pilot holes, screw the bracket in, then hang the light vertically or horizontally.

On our AMBIO sconce the whole job takes about 15 minutes and needs no electrician. Each one ships with a 10-foot (3 m) USB-C cable, so you can charge it on the wall or lift it off and charge it on a desk.

Where does a battery sconce work best?

Anywhere you want a soft, even glow and there is no switch on the wall. The reviews customers leave us keep naming the same places: either side of a bed, a bathroom vanity, a long hallway and both sides of a piece of art.

One customer, an interior designer, wrote in a review that an electrician had quoted $800 to wire sconces by a vanity. They put up battery sconces there instead.

How long does one charge last?

One 5-hour USB-C charge runs a Mistiva battery sconce for up to 10 days in ambient use. Brighter settings shorten that, and the remote's auto-off timer (15, 30 or 60 minutes) stretches it.

The light switches between warm 3000K, neutral 4000K and cool 6000K, and every tone dims. Warm suits a bedroom at night; cool suits a vanity in the morning.

The AMBIO battery sconce is a 23-inch aluminum bar with an acrylic diffuser, $175 in five finishes, rated 4.8 out of 5 from 257 reviews on Loox (October 2026). See every model in battery operated wall sconces, or start with AMBIO in gold.

When is wiring still the better choice?

Choose a hardwired sconce when the wall is already open for a renovation or you want the light on a wall switch. A hardwired sconce connects to a junction box, and the U.S. Fire Administration advises that all electrical work in your home be done by a qualified electrician.

Our hardwired AMBIO runs on 120V and gives 700 lumens, about the output of a 60W bulb, from $195. The hardwired wall sconces share the battery models' design and finishes.

Frequently asked

Do battery wall sconces need an electrician?

No. A battery sconce has no wires to connect. It hangs on a bracket held by one or two screws, and Mistiva's take about 15 minutes to put up.

Can you leave a battery wall sconce plugged in?

Yes. Keep the USB-C cable connected and the sconce runs from the outlet while its battery stays charged. Unplug it and it carries on running on battery.

Will mounting a sconce damage the wall?

Mounting leaves one or two small screw holes. Taking the sconce down later means filling those holes, with no drywall to patch around a junction box.

How do you charge a sconce that is on the wall?

Plug the 10-foot (3 m) USB-C cable into the sconce where it hangs, or lift it off its bracket and charge it elsewhere. A full charge takes about 5 hours.

Can you change the light color?

Mistiva's sconces switch between warm 3000K, neutral 4000K and cool 6000K from the remote or the touch button, and every tone dims.
