What light works for your room

Nearly every call starts the same way. Someone has found a piece they like, and then comes the hesitation: will it work in my room? Underneath that question there are usually three others, and they have short answers.

How high should a chandelier hang?

About seven feet from the floor to the lowest point of the fixture. That figure holds whether your ceiling is eight feet or eighteen.

It sounds counterintuitive — surely a taller room wants the light higher? But light falls off quickly with distance. A fixture near the top of a two-storey void spends most of its output on drywall nobody looks at, and the room below stays dim while the ceiling glows. The height of your ceiling changes how much cable you need. It doesn't change where the light should sit.

Over a dining table the rule shifts slightly, because nobody walks under it: thirty to thirty-six inches above the tabletop puts the light on the food and the faces without cutting the room in half.

What size fixture does a two-storey entry need?

Wider than you think. In a tall volume a narrow fixture reads as something that got lost on the way up — there's nothing for the eye to measure the space against.

For an entry running two storeys, forty-eight inches is a reasonable floor to start from. Not because bigger is better, but because width is what gives a tall room its sense of scale. One customer building a house in Texas hung a three-ring Matrix in an eighteen-foot entry, centred in the window above the front door, so that the piece reads from the driveway at night before anyone knocks.

If there's a window above your door, that alignment is worth more than an inch either way on the diameter.

Can you hang a ring on a sloped ceiling?

Yes, and it doesn't need a special kit. What changes is where you measure from and how the canopy sits.

On a slope, measure to the floor from the lowest point of the fixture, the same as anywhere else — but check the clearance on the high side of the room as well, because a piece that clears your head at the wall may not clear it at the peak. A customer in Vail hung a Cristallo on a sloped ceiling for Christmas, on a timeline he described as very tight, and the install was ordinary.

Our suspension cables ship long and get cut to length during the install, which is what makes the slope a non-issue.

What about an eight-foot ceiling?

The seven-foot rule still holds, which leaves you about a foot of drop. That's enough for a single ring but not for a stacked set, so a low ceiling usually points you toward one ring rather than three.

The other thing that changes is diameter. In a smaller room a wide piece can crowd the space visually even when it physically fits. If you're unsure, the honest answer is to send us a photo of the room and the ceiling height — most of the time that's all we need.

What if the room already has recessed lights?

Then you have general light, and what's missing is the light at eye level. That's usually why a room with plenty of cans still feels flat after dark: everything is coming from one plane, straight down.

A ring at seven feet does something recessed lighting can't, which is put light where people are rather than above them. The two aren't in competition — most rooms want both, on separate switches.
